Most hostels sit within a short walk of Takayama Station on the west side of the Miyagawa River, which puts you close to both the Sanmachi Suji preserved streets and the Miyagawa Asaichi morning market without needing any transport. A few cheaper options are tucked a bit further north near the Higashiyama temple walking course, quieter at night and still easy on foot.

- The Miyagawa Asaichi runs every morning along the river from around 7am. Get there before 8:30am and you'll have the pickle vendors and craft stalls mostly to yourself before tour groups arrive.
- Book the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go well before you arrive in Takayama. Seats sell out weeks in advance in October and November, and there is no realistic alternative route.
