Kannawa is the district worth the 30-minute ride: public baths are cheaper there, the steam actually rises off the streets, and you can walk between the jigoku pools without a taxi.
Getting around
- Pick up a Kamenoi Bus MY BEPPU FREE day pass at the station kiosk before heading to Kannawa. It covers the round trip plus the Myoban district and pays for itself after two rides.
- Takegawara Onsen, a two-minute walk from the station, charges a small fee for the regular bath. Do the sand bath there instead of a tourist spa: staff bury you in naturally heated sand, and it costs a fraction of the resort version.
- The combined jigoku ticket covers seven pools but half of them look nearly identical. If budget is tight, buy single entries for Umi Jigoku (blue) and Chinoike Jigoku (red) only, and skip the rest.
