Local knowledge for Izmir
Where to stay
Alsancak is the go-to base, with hostels clustered around Kıbrıs Şehitleri Caddesi and easy walking distance to the Kordon waterfront. Basmane, just south, runs cheaper and puts you next to the train station and the entrance to Kemeraltı bazaar.
Getting around
- Take the IZBAN commuter rail from Adnan Menderes Airport straight to Alsancak or Basmane station. It costs a fraction of a taxi and runs every 20 minutes.
- Lunch at the small lokantalar inside Kemeraltı off Anafartalar Caddesi. A full plate of stew, bread, and ayran will cost you very little and the food is better than anything near the tourist waterfront.
- If you want to visit Çeşme or Alaçatı, take the IZBAN to Cumaovası and connect to a Çeşme-bound bus. Organized tours from the city center charge three to four times what the public route costs.
When to go
Hostels are easiest to book and cheapest from November through March. July and August fill up as domestic tourists head for the Aegean coast, so book at least a week out during those months.
