Local knowledge for Istanbul
Where to stay
Most budget hostels cluster in Sultanahmet, which puts you within walking distance of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and around Karakoy and the side streets off Istiklal Avenue in Beyoglu. Kadikoy on the Asian side runs noticeably cheaper and has a better food scene. The Eminonu ferry gets you there in 25 minutes.
Getting around
- Pick up an Istanbulkart at any metro station kiosk on arrival. It covers the T1 tram, metro lines, buses, and ferries at a lower per-ride rate than single tokens, and reloading is easy.
- The Eminonu to Kadikoy commuter ferry (line 2) crosses the Bosphorus for the same fare as a metro ride. It does what paid boat tours charge 10x more for.
- Eat one block away from any major sight. The same lentil soup and gözleme that costs more inside Sultanahmet costs much less around the Spice Bazaar or anywhere in Kadikoy.
When to go
January and February bring the lowest hostel prices and short queues at every major site. April, May, July, and August are when Sultanahmet and Beyoglu hostels book out weeks ahead.
