Getting around
- Take the small boat across the Tamarindo estuary to reach Playa Grande. The crossing costs next to nothing, the beach is long and far less crowded, and it sits inside Las Baulas National Marine Park.
- Skip the restaurants on the main beach strip and eat at the sodas one or two blocks inland. A casado with rice, beans, protein, and salad is cheap. The same meal on the waterfront costs two to three times as much.
- Fly into Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport (LIR) rather than San José. The shuttle to Tamarindo takes around an hour from Liberia. From San José it is three to four hours of winding mountain roads.
