Local knowledge for Sukhothai

Where to stay

Most budget travelers base themselves in New Sukhothai near the night market and bus terminal, in the area around Jarot Withithong Road, where guesthouses and food are concentrated. A smaller cluster of accommodation sits right at the historical park entrance in Mueang Kao, about 12 km out, which makes sense if you want to be at the ruins before the tour groups arrive.

Getting around

  • Rent a bicycle at the historical park entrance rather than hiring a tuk-tuk. The park is flat and compact, bike rental runs cheaply for the day, and you can reach Wat Mahathat, Wat Si Chum, and the outer zones at your own pace.
  • Buses to Phitsanulok take about an hour and cost a few baht. Phitsanulok is where you pick up the national rail network if you're connecting to Chiang Mai or Bangkok by train, which is almost always cheaper than flying out of Sukhothai's small airport.
  • The historical park is divided into multiple zones with separate entry fees. Zone 1, the central area around Wat Mahathat, holds the densest concentration of ruins. If you only have a few hours, one zone pass is enough and saves you from paying for outer zones you may not reach.

When to go

Rooms are cheapest during the rainy season from June through September, when prices can drop to half of what you'd pay in November, which is the tightest month of the year because Sukhothai hosts one of Thailand's largest Loi Krathong festivals and hostels sell out days or weeks in advance.
