Local knowledge for Chiang Rai

Where to stay

Most hostels cluster along Jet Yod Road and the side streets around the central Clock Tower, close enough to walk to the Night Bazaar on Phahonyothin Road without paying for a ride. A few quieter spots sit north of the Kok River, worth it if you want early morning longtail boats to Chiang Rai's hill tribe villages without fighting for a taxi.

Getting around

  • Songthaews to Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) leave from Bus Terminal 1 on Prasopsuk Road for a few baht each way. Every tuk-tuk near the Night Bazaar will quote you many times more for the exact same trip.
  • The Saturday Walking Street runs along Thanalai Road from around 5pm. It is smaller and less picked-over than Chiang Mai's markets, and you can eat well on khao soi, grilled sai ua sausage, and fresh fruit for next to nothing total.
  • Green Bus from Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal to Chiang Rai costs a small fare and takes 3.5 hours. Minivans shave off 30 minutes but the road through Doi Saket gets winding, and some drivers treat it like a race.

When to go

Rooms are cheapest and easy to find from May through October during the rainy season. December through February fills up fast, and the weeks around Chinese New Year in January or February see hostels along Jet Yod Road book out days in advance.
