Local knowledge for Sucre
Where to stay
Most budget hostels sit in the centro histórico within a few blocks of Plaza 25 de Mayo, which keeps you close to the Mercado Central, the main restaurants, and the sights without needing transport. Calle Aniceto Arce and its cross streets are the sweet spot: central, walkable, and well-lit at night.
Getting around
- Eat almuerzo at Mercado Central. For very little you get soup, a main course, juice, and sometimes dessert. It is the most filling cheap meal in the city and locals eat there every day.
- Micros, the shared minibuses, cover most of the city for next to nothing per ride. They are slower than a taxi but cost a fraction of the price. For the trip out to the Cal Orcko dinosaur tracks, ask your hostel which route or combo gets you there.
- Sucre sits at around 2,750 meters. If you are arriving from sea level, plan a slow first day. The altitude is easier than La Paz or Potosí, but skipping rest and immediately hiking will make you regret it.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest and emptiest during the rainy season (January through March), but beds tighten up fast around August 6th Bolivian Independence Day when Sucre, as the constitutional capital, draws visitors for national events, and again around Carnival in February if the dates fall late.
