Local knowledge for Rhodes

Where to stay

Budget travelers split between two areas: inside the medieval walls of the Old Town, where hostels cluster near Sokratous Street and Ippokratous Square, and the New Town district of Neochori just north along the waterfront toward Mandraki Harbor, which tends to be quieter and slightly cheaper than staying intra muros.

Getting around

  • Rent a scooter from one of the rental shops near Mandraki Harbor. Lindos is roughly 55km south, the public bus takes well over an hour each way, and a scooter lets you pull off at the smaller coves along the east coast road that the tour groups skip.
  • Restaurants on Sokratous Street are priced for day-trippers off the cruise ships. Walk one or two streets back into the Old Town and the same grilled fish and mezze cost noticeably less.
  • If your hostel is inside the Old Town walls, ask about after-hours gate access before you book a late ferry arrival. Some entrances lock up at night and walking the perimeter with a bag is not how you want to start a trip.

When to go

April, May, and October offer the lowest hostel rates. July and August fill weeks out, especially anything inside the Old Town walls, so book well ahead if your dates are fixed.
