Where to stay
Most budget travelers base themselves in Kos Town, within a few blocks of the ferry port along Apellou and Vironos streets. That puts you walking distance from the ancient Agora, the harbor, and every onward connection. Lambi, just north along the beach road, has cheaper rooms but requires a bike or bus to get anywhere worth going.
Getting around
- Rent a bicycle on day one. Kos is flat, has proper cycling lanes, and a bike costs less per day than a single taxi ride to the beach resorts. Most hostels can point you to shops on Vasileos Georgiou street.
- Eat lunch near Eleftherias Square at the covered market, not on the harbor promenade. Same grilled fish, often half the price once you step one street back from the waterfront.
- Day trips to Nisyros (the volcano island) leave from the main port most mornings. Book directly at the dock rather than through accommodation, and you will pay the local rate, not the tourist markup.
When to go
May and late September are the sweet spot, warm enough to swim with prices noticeably lower. July and August fill hostels in Kos Town two to three weeks out, especially anything near the port.
