Where to stay

Most budget beds sit in the old Inca grid (Qosqo Ayllu) just north of Plaza de Armas, where the cobbled lanes like Calle del Medio still run water channels down their middle. If you want an early train, look at the cheaper places along Avenida Ferrocarril between the plaza and the station so you are not hauling a pack across town at dawn.

Getting around

• Skip the paid main fortress one morning and climb the Pinkuylluna granaries on the opposite hillside instead. The trailhead is off Calle Lari, it is free, and the view down over the ruins is better.
• For Cusco or Urubamba, take a colectivo from the corner near the bridge on the main road rather than a taxi. It is a few soles versus a long negotiation, and they leave when full all day.
• Book the PeruRail or Inca Rail train to Aguas Calientes well ahead and grab the cheapest Expedition or Voyager class. Same track, same views, far less money, and seats genuinely sell out in dry season.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest in the November to March rainy months and fill up fast from June through August, peaking around the Inti Raymi crowds in late June.
