Local knowledge for Wadi Rum
Where to stay
Rum Village sits at the entrance to the protected area and is where almost all budget beds are, from simple guesthouses along the main road to family-run camps a short walk from the Visitor Centre. A handful of camps operate inside the desert itself, which costs more but puts you far from the generator noise and closer to the rock formations.
Getting around
- Buy the Jordan Pass before you fly into Jordan. It covers the Wadi Rum entry fee along with Petra and dozens of other sites, and it nearly always works out cheaper than paying each separately at the gate.
- Stock up on food and snacks in Aqaba before heading out. The few shops in Rum Village carry basics at a markup, and camps rarely include more than tea and a set dinner in the price.
- Book a full day or overnight rather than a half-day jeep tour. A half-day gets you to maybe two or three stops at speed. Sites like Khazali Canyon and the Burdah rock bridge are worth slow mornings, before the midday group tours arrive.
When to go
Rates drop and beds open up in July and August when daytime heat pushes past 35°C regularly. March through May and September through October are the busy months, and decent camps in Rum Village sell out weeks ahead during those periods.
