Most budget guesthouses cluster within walking distance of the Shali ruins, the crumbling mud-brick fortress at the center of town. That area puts you close to the main market, Cleopatra's Spring, and the donkey-cart stands that double as local transit.
Getting around
- Rent a bicycle from one of the shops near the town center instead of hiring a driver. The roads out to Cleopatra's Spring and the Temple of the Oracle at Aghurmi are flat, and you will pay a fraction of the taxi rate.
- Carry enough cash from Cairo or Marsa Matruh before arriving. Siwa has very few working ATMs, and most guesthouses and small restaurants do not take cards.
- West Delta Bus Company runs buses between Cairo and Siwa (roughly 8 to 9 hours). Book at least a day ahead from October through February, when seats sell out regularly.
