Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster near the lower dock, the main lancha terminal where boats arrive from Panajachel and San Marcos, and along the lakefront path that runs toward the beach area. That stretch has the highest concentration of guesthouses, Spanish schools, and cheap restaurants within easy walking distance of the water taxis.

Getting around

• Walk two or three blocks uphill from the lake to find comedores serving a full set almuerzo for Q25 to Q35. Restaurants on the waterfront path charge two or three times as much for comparable food.
• Lanchas to Panajachel and San Marcos La Laguna leave from the lower dock; boats to Santiago Atitlán use a separate dock on the other side of town. Buy your ticket at the dock booth rather than from touts on the path, who charge more for the same departure.
• Spanish schools in San Pedro cost meaningfully less per week than those in Antigua, and most offer packages that bundle a homestay and meals. If you plan to study, spending an hour comparing the half-dozen schools near the dock can save you several hundred quetzales.

When to go

Semana Santa (March or April) and the two weeks around Christmas and New Year are when hostels fill fastest and prices climb most; September and October, in the heart of the rainy season, are the quietest and cheapest months to visit.
