Local knowledge for Reykjavik
Where to stay
Most hostels sit along or just off Laugavegur, the main street running through the 101 district. That location puts you within walking distance of Hallgrímskirkja, the Harpa concert hall on the waterfront, and nearly every restaurant and bar worth visiting.
Getting around
- Kolaportið, the weekend flea market near the old harbor, sells second-hand lopapeysa wool sweaters for a fraction of what the souvenir shops on Laugavegur charge. It runs Saturday and Sunday.
- Take the Flybus from Keflavik Airport to BSÍ bus terminal rather than a taxi. The taxi fare is roughly four to five times the cost of the bus, and the bus drops you close to the main hostel area.
- Alcohol at bars is expensive enough to noticeably affect your budget. Vínbúðin, the state-run liquor store with locations in the city center, sells spirits and beer at much lower prices before you head out.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest in April, May, and late September through October. June through August fills up quickly, especially around the summer solstice, so expect higher prices and low availability if you wait.
