Where to stay
Most budget hostels sit in Northbridge, clustered around William Street and Newcastle Street, a short walk from Perth Station and the free CAT bus network. Fremantle is a solid alternative if you want beach access and the market scene, about 30 minutes on the Transperth Fremantle line.
Getting around
- Use the free CAT buses. The Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, and Purple routes cover central Perth and Northbridge, so you can get around most of the city center without touching your transport budget.
- The Fremantle Markets on South Terrace run Friday through Sunday, opening at 8am. Grab cooked food or fresh produce there instead of eating at restaurants on the Cappuccino Strip every night.
- If your dates are flexible, skip late January through early February. Fringe World Festival runs then, dorm prices go up noticeably, and beds in Northbridge book out well in advance.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest from May through September when the heat backs off, and they fill fastest from late December through February when summer, school holidays, and Fringe World all land at once.
