Local knowledge for New York City
Where to stay
Budget travelers do well in Bushwick (Brooklyn) or Astoria (Queens), both a short subway ride into Manhattan. Astoria reaches Midtown directly on the N/W, while Bushwick rides the L to a 14th Street transfer. The Lower East Side puts you walking distance from SoHo, Chinatown, and the Delancey-Essex subway hub, though you'll pay a bit more for that location.
Getting around
- Take the A train from JFK to Manhattan for a couple of dollars. The cab or rideshare runs many times more for the same trip.
- Smorgasburg at Williamsburg's East River State Park (Saturdays, April through October) is the cheapest way to eat well without venturing into a sit-down restaurant.
- Avoid hostels marketed as 'Midtown' or 'Times Square adjacent.' You are paying for the address. A bed in Harlem or Crown Heights costs significantly less and puts you one or two stops away on the 2/3 or A/C.
When to go
January and February have the lowest rates outside of holidays. Hostels fill up fast from late June through August, and prices spike again around Thanksgiving week and the days bracketing New Year's Eve.
