Local knowledge for Muscat

Where to stay

Mutrah is where budget travelers cluster, close to the Mutrah Corniche waterfront and a short walk from the souq. Ruwi, a few kilometers inland, has cheaper guesthouses near the ONTC bus station and makes sense if you're catching early departures.

Getting around

  • ONTC intercity buses out of Ruwi Bus Station cost a fraction of what taxis charge to Nizwa or Sur. Buy your ticket at the station the day before.
  • Stalls at the front of Mutrah Souq quote tourist prices. Walk deeper in, past the frankincense and silver section, toward where the local vendors are.
  • Muscat's orange-and-white taxis are unmetered, and Uber and Careem do not operate in Oman, so agree the fare before you get in for short hops between Mutrah, Ruwi, and Qurum. For longer city stretches, Mwasalat's public buses cost a fraction of any taxi.

When to go

June through September is the cheapest window by far, when 40°C heat keeps most visitors away. Rooms fill up and prices climb November through March, especially around the Muscat Festival in January.
