Local knowledge for Mendoza
Where to stay
Most budget hostels cluster within a few blocks of Plaza Independencia, particularly along Aristides Villanueva and the streets off Sarmiento. That corridor puts you walking distance from the pedestrian mall, cheap eats, and the bus stops that connect you to the bus terminal.
Getting around
- Skip the packaged wine tour and take the local bus to Maipú (Ruta 60, about 20 minutes from the terminal), rent a bike from one of the stands near the stop, and visit bodegas like Familia Di Tomasso or Mevi on your own. You'll spend a quarter of what a tour costs.
- Load a SUBE card at any kiosko and use the local buses between the centro and the bus terminal instead of paying taxi prices.
- Buy wine at the Carrefour on Av. San Martín rather than at restaurants. Decent Malbec starts around 2 USD a bottle, and you'll find the same labels that cost ten times more at a bodega restaurant.
When to go
Hostels fill up and prices spike in January, February, and the first weekend of March for Vendimia. May through August, outside of ski-season weekends when people are heading to Las Leñas, is when you'll find the cheapest beds.
