Where to stay
Most budget guesthouses sit in Baixa, the city center grid, within a few blocks of Avenida 24 de Julho and Mercado Central. It puts you close to chapas, cheap eats, and the waterfront without needing a taxi for every errand.
Getting around
- Chapas (shared minibuses) run fixed routes for a small fare. The Baixa-to-Polana corridor along Avenida 24 de Julho is the one to know, saving you from tourist taxi rates on the most common cross-town trip.
- Eat lunch at the stalls inside Mercado Janete on Avenida Mao Tse Tung. Chicken, rice, and a cold drink runs you very cheaply, and the market itself is a good reason to wander Malhangalene.
- ATMs in Baixa regularly run out of meticais on weekends when South Africans cross the border. Withdraw cash on a weekday morning or carry a card backup.
When to go
Beds are cheapest and easy to find November through April (wet season). June through August is dry season and South African school holiday overlap, so hostels fill quickly and prices climb.
