Most budget hostels cluster in Hwangnam-dong, in the streets just north of Tumuli Park around the former Gyeongju Station (now a cultural center, since trains no longer stop in the city center). Staying here puts Cheomseongdae Observatory and Donggung Palace at a 10-minute walk, with no bus fare needed.
Getting around
- Arrive at the KTX station, renamed Gyeongju Station in 2023 (formerly Singyeongju). It sits about 20 minutes outside the historic core, so check the bus connection times before you land or split a taxi into Hwangnam-dong.
- Rent a bike near the station for a modest daily fee. The entire historic zone is flat, and cycling the tumuli mounds loop to Anapji Pond takes under two hours.
- Hwangnam bread shops on Hwangnidan-gil sell Gyeongju's famous red bean pastries for a few coins each. Skip the tourist shops near Bulguksa and buy them here instead.
