Where to stay

Most budget beds cluster in Zona Velha, the old quarter, within a short walk of Rua de Santa Maria and the Mercado dos Lavradores. A few cheaper options sit farther uphill near the Monte cable car base, which saves you the fare if you plan to ride it anyway.

Getting around

  • Buy a 24-hour bus pass at the Horários do Funchal terminal on Avenida do Mar. It covers the full city network and costs a fraction of individual tickets, including routes that reach the levada trailheads.
  • The Levada dos Piornais starts inside the city limits, no taxi or tour required. Pack lunch from the Mercado dos Lavradores stalls before you go.
  • Avoid restaurants on the marina promenade with menus in four languages. Walk two or three blocks inland toward Rua de João Tavira and prices for the same grilled fish drop considerably.

When to go

Beds are cheapest from mid-January through March. July and August push prices up across the board, and New Year's Eve week is the single most expensive stretch of the year, when Funchal's fireworks draw visitors from across Europe.
