Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster in the lanes between Lyabi-Hauz and the Kalon Minaret, putting you within a five-minute walk of the main sights without needing a taxi. A few cheaper guesthouses sit just outside the old city walls on the Ark Fortress side, which is noticeably quieter after dark.

Getting around

  • Marshrutkas from the Avtovokzal to Samarkand cost very little. Shared taxis are faster, but agree on the price before you get in or you will pay tourist rate.
  • Eat lunch at the chaikhanas around Lyabi-Hauz, not dinner. Menus often double in price after 6pm once tour groups arrive.
  • The covered trading domes Toki-Zargaron and Toki-Sarrafon sell nearly identical scarves and ceramics. Toki-Sarrafon gets less foot traffic so vendors there negotiate more readily.

When to go

Beds are easiest to find and cheapest in July and August when temperatures regularly hit 40°C and tour groups thin out. April, May, September, and October fill up fast as the weather improves and group tours arrive in force.
