Local knowledge for Baku

Where to stay

Most budget guesthouses cluster around 28 May metro station or just inside the Icheri Sheher (Old City) walls. Staying near 28 May gives you the interchange for both metro lines and easy access to Taza Bazaar, while the Old City itself is walkable to everything but costs a bit more for the location.

Getting around

  • Get a BakiKart at any metro station. A single ride costs pocket change and the network covers every neighborhood you need, with 28 May as the main interchange point.
  • Qutab, the stuffed flatbreads sold from stalls near Taza Bazaar and along Nizami Street, runs cheap. Eating inside Icheri Sheher is fine for dinner, but you will pay two to three times more for lunch at the same quality.
  • Check whether your dates overlap the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, held on the Baku City Circuit along Neftchilar Avenue, usually in September. Hostel beds sell out weeks in advance and prices double or triple for that weekend.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest from November through February, when visitor numbers drop. May through September fills beds quickly, with the F1 Grand Prix weekend seeing the sharpest price spikes of the year.
