Local knowledge for Auckland
Where to stay
Most budget accommodation clusters along Karangahape Road (K Road) and the lower CBD near Queen Street. K Road puts you within walking distance of Britomart station, the city's main transit hub, and has enough cafes and bars that you rarely need to go far at night.
Getting around
- Pick up an AT HOP card at any convenience store on arrival. Bus, train, and ferry fares run noticeably cheaper per trip compared to paying cash, and it works across the whole network.
- Go to the Otara Flea Market on Saturday mornings (Newbury Street, Otara). It's a 20-minute bus ride south and you can eat a full breakfast of Pacific hangi or Samoan chop suey for pocket change. Nothing in the city centre comes close.
- Skip the Sky Tower observation deck (pricey) and walk up Maungawhau/Mt Eden instead. It's free, the 360-degree crater views are better, and it's about a 20-minute walk from K Road hostels.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest in June and July, when school is in and the weather is damp. January and the week between Christmas and New Year fill beds fast and prices climb noticeably.
